ILOILO City – Outrigger sailboats from Aklan province and Leganes, Iloilo conquered the 46th Iloilo Paraw Regatta yesterday.
“Ashley” topped Category C for owner ChodyBelejerdo of Barangay Sambiray, Malay, Aklan to beat 14 other paraws and get the highest cash prize of P100,000.
“Discovery 1” dominated Category B for its owner, Seriel Prado, to dominate 14 other contenders and claim the P75,000 cash prize.
“Arlyn,” owned by Orlando Demetillo of Barangay Camangay, Leganes retained the championship in Category A, besting 13 other paraws.
Demetillo again brought home the P50,000 grand cash prize and the P5,000 builder’s prize.
Category A was for sailboats with a waterline length of not more than 16 feet; Category B, 16.1 feet to 22 feet; and Category C, 22.1 feet and above.
The Iloilo Paraw Regatta is considered the oldest sailing event in Asia that pays homage to the paraw, a native wind-powered double-outrigger sailboat.
