ILOILO – Policemen are hunting a former member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines for shooting a neighbor in Brgy. Guinacas, Pototan town.
The 60-year-old Avelino Penalver fled after shooting Jessie Mendoza, 30.
The incident happened around 10:20 p.m. on Monday while the victim and the suspect were at the wake of a dead neighbor.
According to the police, prior to the shooting, Mendoza and brother Jay-R were playing cards against Penalver and a son of the suspect. A heated argument ensued among them.
The suspect and his son left but several minutes later, the younger Penalver returned and suddenly punched Mendoza.
The suspect later reappeared with a gun and shot Mendoza.
Mendoza got hit on the chest. He was taken to the Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital.
Policemen recovered an empty shell of a .45 pistol from the crime scene.
A frustrated murder charge would be filed against the suspect./PN
