Returning province makes presence felt on Day 1
NEGROS Occidental started its campaign in the 2018 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet in Iloilo City on a bright note.
Negrense athletes were making their presence felt early in their return to the regional sports event after a two-year absence.
Shot put players from Iloilo and Negros Occidental captured gold medals yesterday at the Iloilo Sports Complex.
Iloilo had a 1-2 finish in elementary girls. Hannah Ahlea Apdo of Cabilao Elementary School in Carles town won gold with her 9.39m heave.
Apdoâs teammate Rhealyn de Costa of Salong Elementary School in Balasan settled with silver with 9.21m. Ciarne Mistele Ola of Guimaras province bagged bronze with 8.39m.
Negros Occidental took home the gold medal in secondary girls courtesy of Jamela De Asis of Himamaylan City with 11.76m. Guimarasâ Ma. Thea Gallego ended up with silver (10.69m) while Negros Occidentalâs Ann Katherine Quitoy had bronze (10.19m).
Negros Occidental also had a strong start in secondary girls volleyball as it swept Guimaras selection 25-16, 25-12 in a match held at the Central Philippine University (CPU) gym.
Alyssa Bertolano, Marianne Sotomil, Shane Carmona, and Joan Marie Monares were at the forefront of the offense of Negrenses as they built an early advantage before thwarting any run by the Guimaras squad.
They clinched a second win later that day after sweeping Antique 25-12, 25-17.
Negros Occidental â Harold Alarcon, Christian Gamao, Alec Tan, and Andy Villaver â also had a strong start in secondary boys 3×3 basketball after beating Iloilo 21-9.
In football over at the CPU grounds, Negros Occidentalâs elementary and secondary teams went on huge victories with the former defeating Aklan (8-0) and the latter edging Capiz (4-0).
Antiqueâs secondary football teamâs 2-0 victory over Aklan was hit with a disaster as Dan Dalumpines suffered an injury on the pelvic bone. He was immediately rushed to the hospital after the match, according to Antique coach Ian Juala.
Meanwhile Edna Magtubo handed Iloilo its second gold after topping the secondary girls 3000m. Taking silver and bronze medals were Negros Occidentalâs Grace Tejones and Charry Villanueva.
Iloilo teamâs third gold came from Francis John Biñas in secondary boys high jump event. Finishing behind him were Negros Occidentalâs Judipaer Caranzo and Aklanâs Hughene Lachica.
Aklan had a 1-2 finish in secondary boys shot put with Kirk Aisne Caldeo winning gold and Jil Iron Tabuena capturing silver. Negrosâ June Philip Martinez won bronze.
Guimaras also captured its first gold medal courtesy of EJ Secorta in elementary boys high jump. Capizâs John Paul Balsote and Negros Occidentalâs Von Karl Espelita won silver and bronze, respectively./PN
