KALIBO, Aklan – Birth registration in Aklan has increased 2 percent, records from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed.
The PSA posted 14,177 births last year, 234 higher compared to 13,943 births in 2016.
Of the recent figures, 61 percent (8,582 births) were registered on time while 39 percent (5,563 births) were registered late.
The highest increase in birth registration was in Ibajay with 28 percent, from 1,091 births in 2016 to 1,391 in 2017.
It was followed by Nabas with 26 percent (623 to 788) and Madalag with 24 percent (426 to 530), the records showed.
Meanwhile, Kalibo recorded the highest registration in 2017 with 6,283 births, followed by Ibajay and Malay.
Provincial Statistics Officer Antonet Catubuan attributed the increase to the free mobile registration program in Aklan.
“This implies that people are becoming more aware of the importance of birth certificates. We are glad because it’s one way of strengthening the civil registry system,” Catubuan said.
She urged local civil registry offices in the province to further intensify the civil registration
program not only through registration campaign but also through correcting defects in civil registry documents.
The birth registration data were derived from copies of birth certificates submitted monthly by the civil registry offices to PSA. (With PSA Aklan/PN)
