ILOILO City – President Rodrigo Duterte will confer Lapu-Lapu Presidential Awards to seven soldiers wounded in action (WIA) when he visits Camp General Adriano Hernandez in Dingle, Iloilo today.

The soldiers, members of the Philippine Army’s 61st Infantry Division, were ambushed by the New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Pangilihan, Janiuay, Iloilo last Oct. 16, 2017.

Duterte will also be addressing soldiers to boost their morale, according to 301st Infantry Brigade commander Colonel Pio Diñoso, and join the troops in a boodle fight.

The government is bent on wiping out the NPA in Panay Island before 2018 is over. Duterte decided to stop the peace negotiations because the rebels’ offensive operations have not ceased.

The seven WIA soldiers would also be receiving egg layer machines (ELM) as part of the livelihood program of Camp Hernandez.

ELM is part of the KISS ME (Karne, Isda, Supply, Suporta sa Masa at Ekonomiya) project that will be established inside the camp. KISS ME is a partnership of the Department of Agriculture and Department of National Defense to give WIA soldiers the opportunity to manage their own outlets as additional livelihood.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division based in Jamindan, Capiz has started forming a new battalion to address the insurgency in Panay Island, according to Diñoso.

“It will augment the existing battalions in Panay. We can complete this new battalion before 2018 ends,” said Diñoso.

The Army general, however, said the military and police alone could not end the insurgency. The community must participate in the effort, he stressed.

“Help us by giving information about the rebels,” Diñoso urged the people of Panay.

In his Proclamation 360 ending the peace talks, President Duterte cited the series of atrocities committed by the rebels against military and civilian targets in various parts of the country. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency/PN)
