BORACAY – Tourism officials must promote beaches in northern Aklan and the nearby Carabao Island as this world-famous island grapples to fix its environmental woes, according to urban planner Architect Jun Palafox.
“Maganda rin ‘yung mainland Aklan e. Marami ding beach doon, tapos Carabao Island. We need some planning also there,” Palafox told DZMM radio on Sunday. “If it’s possible lagyan ng cable cars, interconnect them para hindi na lahat Boracay.”
He added that as early as 1991, he had made recommendations on how the island resort must be developed.
They were largely ignored, though, he said. Palafox did not further elaborate what these recommendations were.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) said many establishments drain their sewage directly into the sea, seen as the reason for the worsening water pollution in the island.
Of the 150 Boracay business establishments recently inspected, only 25 were connected to the sewerage line.
Many establishments were also built too close to the beach and crowding into the roads of the 1,000-hectare island, DOT said.
President Rodrigo Duterte on Feb. 9 threatened to “close” Boracay if its environmental problems remain unfixed within six months.
Palafox said it is not too late to correct the mistakes in the development of Boracay.
But he warned that other tourist destinations seemed to be following the steps of the tourist hotspot.
“Some of our islands nire-repeat ‘yung mistake ng Boracay. Kagaya ng cities sa provinces nire-repeat ang mistakes ng Metro Manila,” Palafox said. (With a report from ABS-CBN News/PN)
