MANILA â Dindin Santiago-Manabat had a rousing return in volleyball. She led Foton Tornadoes to a 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 25-22 victory over Generika-Ayala Lifesavers in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.
After being inactive for around a year due to her torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), Manabat made her presence felt, towing the Tornadoes to a furious run in the third and fourth sets to take its first win in the season-opening conference.
Manabat finished with 14 points, on eight attacks and five service aces, while American import Brooke Kanda delivered 17 attacks and two blocks to emerge with 21 points for the Tornadoes.
Manabat did not show any rust in her first action in 10 months as shown in the third set where the Tornadoes erected a 12-point advantage, 20-8, to clinch the set victory and build enough momentum for the deciding set.
The Lifesavers hung around and tried to extend the game to a fifth set, 21-23, but Manabat scored on a sharp kill to claim the match point, 24-21, before Kranda connected a strong hit to seal the victory.
Despite the rousing debut, Tornadoes head coach Rommel Abella said that he is still far from satisfied with the performance of his players but is optimistic that they will regain their championship form soon.
âIf Iâll put a number on it, I think around 60 to 70 percent pa lang,â said Abella. âWeâre still a bit stiff and jittery. Hopefully, we could improve all the mistakes we had. Anyway, this is still a very good start.â
Trinidad and Tobago import Darlene Ramdin finished with 19 points while Symone Hayden of United States added seven markers for the Lifesavers, which dropped to 0-2 card./PN
