BORACAY – “Enemies” of this popular island destination must be neutralized, according to Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) secretary Roy Cimatu.
Cimatu said this after leading the deployment of the Save Boracay Mission Team on Thursday in Nabas, Aklan.
By “enemies,” Cimatu means the violators of national and local environmental laws in the island.
“The enemies are there. Sewage, basura, mga occupants pumasok sa timberlands. We will neutralize them,” said Cimatu.
The deployment of the mission team is part of DENR’s efforts to fix the environmental woes in Boracay.
“Be courteous and be professional in dealing with the civilians. You are doing these for their own good, for the people of Boracay and Aklan,” Cimatu instructed the mission team members.
The DENR has established a command center in Boracay where mission team members can report their accomplishments.
The Save Boracay Mission Team will be working hand-in-hand with the Metro Boracay Task Force, Boracay Tourist Assistance Center and Task Group-Boracay in enforcing environment laws.
Since last week, the DENR has been serving show cause orders to illegal occupants in wetlands in Boracay.
The agency has also served notices of violation to erring establishments and households.
President Rodrigo Duterte on Feb. 9 threatened to close the island resort if the problems remain unsolved after six months. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
