NEGROS Occidental vice governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has requested the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6 to investigate the brawl between Negros Occidental and Iloilo secondary boys football teams in the recently concluded WVRAA Meet.

Lacson hopes the DepEd can find out what really transpired in the controversial finals match on Feb. 21 at the Iloilo Sports Complex in Iloilo City.

“A lot of stories are coming out on social media, creating conflict among users of the social network from Iloilo and Negros,” Lacson said. “I myself received only raw information [about] the incident.”

Lacson added that he is “sad because of what happened” but stressed that “it is premature to conclude who is at fault unless the DepEd comes up with its own version of the incident to clear the air.”

The controversial match was halted with just 20 minutes into it after national referee Steve Supresencia, Negros head coach Ian Combate and some Negros players figured in a brawl.

Combate punched Supresencia, WVRAA Meet technical officer Dax Ian Barrieto told Bombo Radyo Iloilo.

But Supresencia told Panay News it was a player who struck him first.

May nangyaring bundulan between a player from Negros Occidental and Iloilo.

Supresencia did not press charges after agreeing to reconcile.

As a result, the Negros Occidental team’s bid for the title was forfeited while Iloilo was declared the champion./PN
