PIMENTEL. “There is zero tolerance for politicians who use their position to spread harm among the people, even if they are members of the (ruling) party.”

MANILA – Members of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) in the “drug list” of President Rodrigo Duterte will be suspended, said Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III.

If proven guilty of involvement in the drug trade, they will be expelled from the ruling party, the PDP-Laban president said.

“There is zero tolerance for politicians who use their position to spread harm among the people, even if they are members of the (ruling) party,” the Senate president said.

“The continued existence of the illegal drug trade is contrary to the principles of the party,” he added. “You are not a true member of PDP-Laban if you defy our chairman’s campaign against illegal drugs.”

Duterte had said that their membership in the ruling party will not help government officials involved in the drug trade.

Energy secretary Alfonso Cusi, PDP-Laban vice chairman and head of the party’s discipline committee, will lead efforts to purge the ruling party of “corrupt” members, Pimentel said.

“As the President and our chairman said, if you are unfairly linked to the drug trade, you will be given the chance to clear your name,” said Pimentel.

“However, no help will come to you if we can confirm the allegations,” he added.

Duterte had said he had no idea that mayors Mariano Malones of Maasin town and Alex Centena of Calinog town – local chief executives he himself tagged to the drug trade in 2016 – had joined PDP-Laban.

“I don’t know,” the President told reporters in Sara, Iloilo on Thursday last week. “I have to check and we will be fair.”/PN
