MANILA â Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws handed National University Lady Bulldogs its first defeat in the UAAP Season 80 womenâs volleyball tournament, 25-22, 25-27, 25-13, 25-20 at the San Juan Arena.
Negrense Bernadeth Pons led the way with double-double 18 points and 11 excellent receptions on Wednesday night while Toni Rose Basas added 16 markers for Lady Tamaraws.
With the win, the Tamaraws improved to 4-2 win-loss slate.
The Lady Tamaraws were headed to a set two win with the score tied at 25-all, but Lady Bulldogs managed to get consecutive points from Aiko Urdas to level the set count at 1-1.
The second set defeat served as a motivation for Lady Tamaraws to pounce on Lady Bulldogs in the next two sets as it cruised to an early advantage behind Pons and Basas before holding off Lady Bulldogsâ late game runs.
âMalaking bagay âto para sa amin kasi first time nilang matalo. Hopefully, ma-sustain pa âyung consistency,â said Lady Tamaraws head coach George Pascua. âNag-practice kami sa service receive kasi malakas ang opensa ng NU na nag-materialize naman.â
Risa Sato led the way with 14 markers and 11 digs while Jaja Santiago was held to just 13 points, including two blocks, for Lady Bulldogs, which remained on top with 5-1 win-loss card.
In the first game, Diana Carlos unloaded a season-high 32 points as University of the Philippines Lady Maroons halted a four-game losing skid with a 31-33, 25-23, 25-16, 25-12 conquest of an off-sync University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses.
Everything clicked for Lady Maroons in the game, with setter Rose Cailing and libero Justine Dorog in the rotation along with Bacolodnon Ayel Estrañero, who can orchestrate and defend the floor as well.
Cherry Rondina finished with 23 points and nine digs while Christine Francisco had three blocks and two service aces for a 12-point outing for Golden Tigresses, still without its injured key players Milena Alessandrini and Rica Rivera./PN
