MANILA ā€“ Kaya Iloilo failed to hang on to its early advantage and settled for a 2-2 draw with Davao Aguilas in the Philippines Football League (PFL) at the Davao del Norte Sports Complex.

Kaya ā€“ playing for the first time since partnering with Iloilo province ā€“ got the early lead on Sunday with Alfred Osei draining a shot amid the mad scramble near their goal area in the 17th minute.

The lead was doubled early in the second half as Robert Lopez Mendy threaded Aguilasā€™ defense before sending the ball to Connor Tacagni, who successfully scored a header.

But Aguilas was able to level the count with two consecutive hits from James Younghusband. Aguilas nearly surged but a late Younghusband conversion was defended well.

ā€œItā€™s better to get one point. Not really a good result but we take this as a positive one,ā€ said Kaya Iloilo head coach Noel Marcaida. ā€œAs Iā€™ve said, every point we get matters. Happy with the points but we really have a lot to work on.ā€

Meanwhile JP Voltes Marikina opened its campaign on a bright note after a 2-1 upset over Global Cebu at the Marikina Sports Complex. Keigo Moriyasu and Ryuki Kozawa scored for JP Voltes.

Moriyasu opened the scoring with a stunning strike from outside the box in the 13th minute. The lead was doubled in the 75th minute with Kozawa getting it on the back of the net.

Global Cebu made its last run with Dominic del Rosario unloading a hit in the 88th minute. The Cebuanos had a chance to force a draw but their late hits were defended well./PN
