MANILA – Robert “Toto” Landero of the Philippines will gun for the WBA World minimumweight title when he faces Thammanoon Niyomtrong of Thailand today in Chonburi.

The Pontevedra, Negros Occidental native is engaging in his first world title fight after winning his last two matches last year against fellow Filipinos Vic Saludar and Powell Balaba.

Aside from fulfilling his dream of winning a world title, the 22-year-old Landero also hopes to use his match against Niyomtrong as an opportunity to land big fights.

“Excited na po ako sa laban ko kay Niyomtrong kasi pinaghandaan ko iyon dahil pangarap ko maging world champion,” Landero said in an interview.

“Iyong asawa ko nga ay gusto na akong patigilin sa boxing dahil baka magkaroon ng injury pero naghanda naman akong mabuti,” he said.

Landero will parade an impressive 10-1-2 win-loss-draw record with two stoppage wins. It will be the Negrense fighter’s first time to fight outside of the Philippines.

He added: “Sa nararanasan ko sa buhay doon sa amin sa Negros Occidental, mahirap makakain ka, kailangan pagpawisan mo. Naranasan ko iyon kaya sa boxing talaga ay nagsusumikap ako.”

The 27-year-old Niyomtrong has a perfect 16-0-0 slate with seven knockout wins. He has previously defeated Filipino fighters like Rey Loreto, Bimbo Nacionales and Cris Alfante./PN
