BORACAY – There must be more fire substations in this world-famous island, according to Malay fire marshal Senior Inspector Lorna Parcellano.

Parcellano said additional fire substations in the island will ensure operational readiness and quicker response time of firefighters and members of volunteer groups, like the Boracay Action Group-Boracay Fire Rescue and Ambulance Volunteers., during emergencies.

Currently, there is one fire substation in Boracay, located in Barangay Mano-manoc, which is 8.3 kilometers (km) away from Barangay Yapak and 5.2 km from Barangay Balabag.

The fire substation is equipped with two fire trucks. Another fire truck is temporarily housed at the council building of Barangay Caticlan in mainland Malay.

Aside from additional fire substations in Boracay, Parcellano – former Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) regional disbursing and public information officer – also urged the municipal government to donate a lot property for another fire station in mainland Malay.

Parcellano said the BFP will fund the construction of the fire station.

The fire marshal said the fire-prone shanties, narrow roads and lack of fire hydrants are also causing problems to BFP personnel assigned in Boracay. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
