MANILA â Petron Blaze Spikers recovered from a slow start to score 14-25, 25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 15-13 over Foton Tornadoes in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix on Saturday night at the Santa Rosa Sports Center in Laguna.
Hillary Hurley led the way with 21 points, on 19 attacks and two blocks, while fellow import Lindsay Stalzer added 17 markers, on 11 kills, three blocks and three aces, for Blaze Spikers (6-0).
Tornadoes were so close to dealing Blaze Spikers its first loss after taking a 2-1 set advantage but the latter turned to Stalzer and Hurley in the fourth frame to force a fifth set.
With Stalzer at the firing end, Blaze Spikers raced to an 8-4 advantage in the early stretch of the fifth set, but Brooke Kranda and Tornadoes responded with consecutive points to tie the count at 9.
Blaze Spikers moved closer to the win 14-11 on hits by Mary Remy Palma and Rhea Dimaculangan. Tornadoes made its last push 13-14 before Stalzer delivered a beautiful place shot from the right flank to seal the victory for Petron.
âI think tonight we did great,â Hurley said. âThis is a perfect opportunity for us to learn because we havenât been to a five-setter and any pressure moment yet so Iâm really proud of my team for stepping up.â
Brooke Kranda had 17 kills to finish with 18 points while Elizabeth Wendel and Dindin Santiago-Manabat finished with 16 and 15 points, respectively, for Tornadoes, which suffered its third loss in five starts.
In a previous game, Serbian reinforcement Sara Klisura waxed hot with 19 points to lead Cocolife Asset Managers to a 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 25-17 win over Generika-Ayala Lifesavers./PN
