MANILA – Greg Slaughter was eager to get back in action as Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings fights for its life in Game 3 of the PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinals against San Miguel Beermen tonight at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The 7-foot center’s absence due to a strained hamstring and ankle injury was heavily felt by Kings as it dropped its first two games – 90-102 in Game 1 and 102-104 in Game 2 – in the race-to-four series.
“We’re planning to get back (on Game 3),” said the former PBA Rookie of the Year. “We’re doing everything to get back as soon as I can. Just taking it day by day. As soon as I can jump on it, I’ll be out there.”
“The swelling’s going down but it’s still very painful. I can’t run or jump on it right now, so obviously I can’t play,” he added. “As soon as I can, I can go on it when the pain’s bearable, we’ll be out there.”
Slaughter was averaging 16.7 points and 10.4 rebounds while at the same time being a force on the defensive end with 1.7 blocks in the elimination round of the tournament.
“It’s very frustrating but I try not to let it get the best of me. Right now I need to heal and get my ankle OK so I can get back out there,” he said. “No point in just moping around. Just got to stay positive and try to get healthy again.”
He added: “I believe we can still do it. It’s just a really tall order. San Miguel’s a three-time defending champion and it will just help if we got everything we got.”/PN
