MANILA – The municipal government of Malay in Aklan province was urged to implement proper waste management.

“We hope to strengthen the institutional capacities of LGUs (local government units) in terms of sorting, collecting and composting their communities’ biodegradable as well as plastic wastes,” said Sen. Cynthia Villar.

Malay is the local government managing Boracay, currently under scrutiny for its environmental problems criticized by no less than President Rodrigo Duterte.

Composting is a must, specifically in Boracay, because “establishments there produce a lot of kitchen or food wastes,” said Villar, chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources.

The panel was currently looking into environmental problems in the world-famous tourist haven that Duterte likened to a “cesspool.”

In January Duterte ordered Environment secretary Roy Cimatu to clean up Boracay “within six months.”

Moreover Villar appealed to all sectors to “pitch in” and help in immediately fixing sewerage and garbage problems in the island.

“It entails the day-to-day efforts and discipline of the people as well as tourists or visitors,” the senator said.

“Everyone needs to follow the rules and do everything right from now on if we want to restore the natural beauty of the island,” she added./PN
