ILOILO City – The provincial government of Iloilo was looking into possibly converting the San Joaquin Mother and Child Hospital in San Joaquin town into a district hospital.
The local government unit (LGU) of San Joaquin under Mayor Ninfa Garin was struggling to sustain its operations, according to Provincial Administrator Raul Banias.
“May ara pending request kon pwede ang ila nga hospital i-absorb na lang sang probinsya as one of our district hospitals,” said Banias, also chief of capitol’s Hospital Management Office.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. has given the order to study the possible conversion during a meeting with department heads, Banias said.
Banias will meet with the chief and administrative officers of the hospital, and representatives from the municipal government and the Western Visayas Medical Center next week to discuss the matter.
If the facility is converted into a district hospital and capitol takes over its management, the provincial government will have to shoulder the financial requirements for personnel, maintenance, operations, and capital outlay.
Capitol said the hospital may also be turned into a 25-bed facility.
Currently the San Joaquin LGU runs the hospital with the help of the Department of Health.
If the plan pushes through – by the second quarter of the year if possible, capitol said – the San Joaquin facility will become the 13th district hospital in the province.
Current capitol-run district hospitals in Iloilo are:
* Aleosan District Hospital in Barangay Bancal, Alimodian
* Barotac Viejo District Hospital in Barangay San Lucas, Barotac Viejo
* Dr. Ricardo S. Provido Memorial District Hospital in Barangay Dalid, Calinog
* Don Valerio Palmares Sr. Memorial District Hospital on Alfelor Street, Passi City
* Dr. Ricardo Y. Ladrido Memorial District Hospital in Barangay Poblacion, Ilawod, Lambunao
* Ramon D. Duremdes District Hospital in Barangay Ilaya 1st, Dumangas
* Federico Roman Tirador Sr. Memorial District Hospital in Barangay Jibolo, Janiuay
* Iloilo Provincial Hospital in Barangay Rumbang, Pototan
* Jesus M. Colmenares Memorial District Hospital in Barangay Tingui-an, Balasan
* Ramon Tabiana Memorial District Hospital in Barangay Pungtod, Cabatuan
* Rep. Pedro G. Trono Memorial District Hospital on Garriel Street, Guimbal
* Sara District Hospital in Barangay Anoring, Sara./PN
