A NEGRENSE chess player stamped class in the 8th HDBank Cup International Open Chess Tournament to capture the Challenger category title at the Army Hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Michael Ocido, a native of Victorias City, Negros Occidental, collected 7.5 points on six wins and three draws to win the nine-round category on Sunday. He bagged the $1,200 top prize and a trophy.

Aside from Ocido, a former STI-West Negros University standout, other top finishers in the tournament were his fellow Negrenses Recarte Tiauson of Talisay City (third place) and FIDE Master Nelson Villanueva of La Carlota City (fourth place).

Another top finisher was Woman Candidate Master Kylen Joy Mordido of Dasmariñas, Cavite (sixth place). Vietnam’s FIDE Master Vuong Trung Hieu and Nguyen Huynh Tuan Hai landed on second and fifth places, respectively.

The Challenger category was for players rating below 2100 or unrated.

Meanwhile, Grandmaster Sandro Mareco of Argentina took the Open category title with 7.5 points./PN
