BACOLOD City – Local health personnel were having a hard time convincing parents to have their children administered with anti-measles shots in the hinterland Barangay Camugao, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.
The parents were afraid that the shots would have the same effect as the controversial anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia, Mayor Isidro Zayco told Panay News.
Some even thought the shots were the actual Dengvaxia vaccine, he added.
Dengvaxia had been used in the Department of Health’s immunization program in target areas across the country.
In December last year, manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur disclosed that Dengvaxia could worsen symptoms for individuals who had not previously been infected with the denguevirus.
Barangay Camugao is where the four suspected measles patients came from. Three of them were confirmed to have been infected with the disease, laboratory results from Metro Manila showed.
Zayco on Monday declared a measles outbreak in the city, following the World Health Organization guidelines,
The following day, Provincial Health Office head Dr. Ernel Tumimbang ordered an immediate nonselective measles immunization in the area.
Nonselective immunization refers to total vaccination of children aged nine months to five years old despite them getting anti-measles shots prior to the outbreak.
Zayco said parents who did not consent to have the children immunized were made to sign waivers.
The mayor said countermeasures against measles – a contagious viral disease that ranks as one of the leading causes of childhood mortality around the world – were already in place.
The City Health Office has enough supply of the anti-measles shots, which came from the regional and provincial health offices, he added./PN
