BACOLOD City – The struggles of Filipinos under the Duterte regime will be portrayed in “Kalabaryo ng Bayan” – a local militant group’s version of the “Passion of Christ.”
Ireneo Longinos, chairman of the Kalipunan ng mga Maralitang Mamamayan in Negros Island (Kadamay-Negros), said it will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday near the Fountain of Justice fronting the old city hall.
Longinos said they will stage, among others, the struggles of Filipinos experiencing the ill effects of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law.
He stressed that the TRAIN law only added problems of the poor.
Kadamay-Negros also expressed its concern over “hundreds of thousands” of urban poor individuals across the country facing possible displacement.
It claimed that the current administration may be able to sell lots to aliens if it successfully amends the foreign ownership restriction in the Constitution.
If this pushes through, many urban poor communities will be demolished, Longinos said.
While condemning such, Kadamay-Negros noted the proposed creation of the Department of Human Settlement, which it said will expedite the relocation process for displaced individuals.
The government’s subsidy to poor families is also not enough, Longinos said.
He added that the incentive program can only accommodate 10 million people while there are over 30 million Filipinos living in extreme poverty./PN
