Delivery helper dies in vehicular crash

ILOILO City – A delivery helper on board a van died when the vehicle crashed against a compact car in Aklan province, according to the police in the municipality of Nabas.

Reynaldo Baberia of Caloocan City sustained fatal injuries on the body after the incident in Barangay Unidos, Nabas town. Eight other people were hurt, said Senior Inspector Jeric Vargas.

The collision between the delivery van of King Su Glass and Aluminum Supply and the white Toyota Wigo car happened at around 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Vargas said the speeding delivery van overtook a tricycle, swerving to the other lane, and crashed against the incoming compact car.

“The van driver may have chosen to crash against the car instead of returning to his lane at the risk of hitting the tricycle,” the officer said, citing initial investigation.

Apollo Barrios of Aklan was driving the Wigo car while Jose Corpuz of Caloocan City was behind the van’s steering wheel. They were injured, a police report showed.

Others injured were Ariel Olayta and Roger Casidsid, both of Navotas City; Reynan Apan of Surigao del Norte; Aldrin Verde of Tondo, Manila; and Jimson Portino and Randy Velasco, both of Caloocan City, the report stated.

They were all confined in a hospital in the capital town of Kalibo.

The car was bound for Barangay Caticlan, Malay from Kalibo at the time.

Corpuz faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and multiple frustrated homicide, police said./PN
