ILOILO City – He missed his family, claimed an inmate who escaped from the Iloilo City District Jail Male Dormitory in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district.
The 22-year-old Jeffrey Monserat of Barangay North Baluarte, Molo district was arrested at his house by pursuing policemen hours after bolting the jail on April 4.
He escaped at around 12:30 p.m. by scaling the fence at the back of the jail.
Charged with robbery, Monserat had been detained at the jail since October 2017. He claimed his family never visited him.
“One of our tower jail guards saw Monserat jump over the fence,” said jail warden Superintendent Vicente Papelera.
After his arrest, Monserat was placed in an isolation cell of the Iloilo City District Jail Male Dormitory.
Given the high rate of arrests made by the police and other law enforcement agencies campaigning against illegal drugs and other crimes, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology feared the prison facility would get more congested.
The June 2017 data from the bureau showed the Iloilo City District Jail Male Dormitory to have 856 detainees, or 474.5 percent higher than its ideal capacity of 159 inmates./PN
