‘Check construction sites in Bacolod City’

BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) wants the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to inspect all business establishments that are under construction and undergoing renovation.

The SP particularly wants DOLE to check if business owners are providing their laborers with safety gears, like hard hats or helmets, and if construction sites have safety nets.

These are “measures for safety” for the “protection of the construction workers and bystanders,” an SP approved resolution stated.

Resolution proponent Councilor Bartolome Orola cited the National Building Code, which declares that the state must “safeguard life, health and public welfare, consistent with the principles of environmental management and control.”

The Code ensures safety by guiding, regulating and controlling the location, siting, design, quality of construction materials, construction use occupancy and maintenance, utilities, fixtures, equipment, and mechanical and electrical installations of a building.

With the “side-by-side infrastructure developments greatly influencing” Bacolod’s landscape, the city government must make sure that workers are safe, Orola stressed.

He added that providing the workers with protective gears and installing safety nets in construction sites are among the “requirements that these business establishments should observe to ensure that accidents are prevented.”/PN
