Iloilo City gov’t cites honest taxi drivers

ILOILO City – The city government honored four taxi drivers who returned through a radio station the things their passengers left in their cabs.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III gave certificates of recognition and cash incentives of P2,000 each to Wilfredo Tabangcura of GDR Taxi, Joven Emas of Stryp Taxi, Gerald Inventor of Guadalupe Taxi, and Larry Cabigas of Melvin Taxi.

“May these drivers inspire others to be honest and return the things left inside their taxis. We are really glad to have honest drivers in our city. This would attract more tourists to our city and will bring more investors as well,” said Espinosa.

Tabangcura returned the sun glasses and cell phone owned by his passenger, while Guadalupe, Emas, and Cabigas returned the three boxes of stand fan, cell phone, and Apple iPod, respectively, through Bombo Radyo-Iloilo.

Tabangcura said he felt joy for returning the belongings of his passenger.

“Even though some people consider it a simple thing, I felt obliged to return it to the owner since it does not belong to me. Through this, I want to inspire other taxi drivers to be honest and not to be blinded with things which do not belong to us,” Tabangcura said, noting he also returned a bag containing P100,000 when he was still a bus driver.

Emas said he was happy with the recognition and cash incentive.

“As taxi driver, I have my needs as well, but it never crossed my mind to keep the things left by my passengers,” Emas said.

The taxi drivers were recognized after the city government’s flag ceremony on April 10. (Merianne Grace Ereñeta, Iloilo City PIO/PN)
