BORACAY – Three months before it is closed, this famed beach destination accommodated over 500,000 tourists, records from the Department of Tourism (DOT) island field office showed.
The inventory covered the period January to March.
The arrivals were that of 164,911 domestic tourists and 376,171 foreign tourists, the DOT said.
Chinese and Korean tourists once again dominated the top spots of foreign tourist arrivals in the island.
Chinese tourists came in first with 169,647 arrivals, higher compared to 99,911 arrivals in the same period last year.
Koreans followed with 122,129 arrivals, still higher than last year’s 98,782 arrivals.
Tourists from the United States recorded 7,912 arrivals in Boracay while those from Taiwan, 7,705, United Kingdom, 6,613, and Malaysia, 4,976.
Boracay will likely not reach its two-million tourist target this year as it will be shut down for six months beginning April 26.
The closure will pave way for the speedy rehabilitation of the island, which is under fire for its environmental woes. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
