BORACAY – Local chief executives of 16 towns in Aklan are planning to send volunteers for the much-needed rehabilitation of this island resort.
Malinao mayor Wilbert Ariel Igoy, president of the Provincial Mayors League, said the provincial government has asked them to do so.
“We consider sending at least 20 volunteers per town to help in Boracay’s rehabilitation,” said Igoy. “Their allowances may be sourced from both the budget of the local government and the provincial government.”
The plan is still being finalized, he added.
But the mayors have already agreed that once in the island, the volunteers will be housed in public schools.
In June – when classes start – they will be transferred at the covered gyms of barangays Balabag and Manoc-Manoc, Igoy added.
Boracay will be closed to tourists for six months beginning April 26. The closure is aimed to pave the way for the speedy restoration of the island’s ecology./PN
