THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6 is currently constructing a coastal road in San Jose, capital town of Antique.
The project has an estimated budget requirement of P1.260 billion, according to OIC Assistant Regional Director Jose Al V. Fruto.
It involves the construction of a two-lane, 8-kilometer road from Barangay Comon to Barangay San Pedro, leading to San Jose Port, a major port in the province; construction of seawall/esplanade; and provision of sidewalks, curb and gutter, drainage structures, and other amenities.
“As an access road, the most tangible impact of this project is the reduction of traffic congestion at the provincial capitol, as this will serve as an alternate route for all types of vehicles plying south and north,” Fruto said.
An initial amount of P160 million under the 2017 budget was released for the concreting of the 4.1-kilometer Portland Concrete Cement Pavement (PCCP) road, including drainage system, concrete pavers and electrical, said Fruto.
Another P220 million was included in the 2018 budget for the construction of a 1.06-kilometer PCCP road with drainage and concrete pavers, and construction of a 1,533-lineal meter seawall/esplanade.
The construction of road along the coastal areas of San Jose which connects various barangays along the seacoast is a vital thrust that needs priority support of the national government.
This project is expected to enhance tourism industry and promote socioeconomic activity in the town of San Jose and provide its residents the opportunity to engage in business and home-based livelihood activities that would increase their family’s income./PN
