Electronic gadgets seized from inmates

ILOILO – An unannounced inspection of prison cells at the Iloilo District Jail in Barangay Nanga, Pototan town resulted to the confiscation of prohibited items at the facility.

The recoveries included eight mobile phones and chargers, an iPad, a flash drive, and earphones.

Playing cards were also found, according to Senior Jail Officer 3 Leo Lacerna.

One of the mobile phones was seized from high-profile inmate Jesus “Jing-jing Espinosa Jr. of Barangay Monica Blumentritt, Iloilo City, Lacerna added.

Espinosa was a former councilman in his barangay. He is serving an eight-year prison sentence for frustrated murder as accomplice to the crime.

Espinosa’s conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2012 but his imprisonment was not carried out for years because the records of his case were misplaced. It was only in September 2016 when these were found during an inventory.

Espinosa was charged with frustrated murder on Jan. 21, 2003 for the shooting of Mark Serra, a resident of Barangay Monica-Blumentritt, on Nov. 24, 2002./PN
