STUDENT athletes from Bacolod Tay Tung High School delivered medal finishes during the 2018 Palarong Pambansa in Vigan, Ilocos Sur and at the PRISAA 2018 National Games in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
Tay Tung vice president for sports Jose Montalbo said he considered the school’s two-week campaign a success as they were able to garner 3-8-8 gold-silver-bronze at the Palaro and 9-5-15 at PRISAA.
“I am happy with the result because Palaro and PRISAA were national tournaments and we were able to take home medals,” Montalbo told Panay News. “This only shows that our athletes can keep in step with the best in the country.”
Among those who stood out for the school was Negrense Franz Gela Bintad who delivered a Palaro gold in discus throw and a PRISAA gold and bronze in discus throw and javelin throw.
Also delivering the goods was Bacolod City-native May Therese Gula who finished with gold in 4×400-meter relay, silver in 1,500-meter run and bronze in 800-meter run at the PRISAA.
Bea Delotavo had a PRISAA gold in 100-meter hurdles.
Another school representative which stood out was the secondary girls volleyball team. It delivered a Palaro bronze medal and a PRISAA gold medal.
“Aside from the student athletes who sacrificed this summer, I also want to thank the parents and the school management for their continued support to our sports program,” said Montalbo.

PBA coaches Leo Austria, Chito Victolero and Tim Cone will have an encore in the coming PBA All-Star. They are to call the shots for the three All-Star teams competing against the Gilas Pilipinas team in the May 23-27 event.
All three coaches earned the right of a return trip to the All-Star week based on their respective team’s finishes during the Philippine Cup, which Austria and the San Miguel Beermen won for a record fourth straight season.
Unlike last year, the three coaches switch places this time with Cone handling Mindanao on May 23 in Davao, Austria mentoring Luzon on May 25 in Batangas City and Victolero coaching Visayas team in Iloilo City on May 27.
Last year, only Victolero did better out of the three coaches under the same tournament format as the Mindanao selection managed to hold the national pool team to a draw, 114-all.
Both Austria (Luzon) and Cone (Visayas) went home empty-handed after absorbing a 122-111 and 125-112 beating, respectively.
This year, Cone will have at his disposal a guard-heavy starting lineup composed of Barangay Ginebra player Scottie Thompson, and the Magnolia trio of Mark Barroca, Jio Jalalon, and Peter June Simon, with Blackwater’s Mac Belo as the sole big man in the middle.
The stint with the Mindanao team also marks as a reunion for Cone with Barroca and Simon, with whom he won four titles, including a grand slam in 2014 while still coaching the Hotshots./PN
