Bacolod City illegal structures face demolition – Leonardia

BACOLOD City – The city government plans to demolish the structures that informal settlers have built under the Lupit Bridge along Lacson Extension.

A bridge widening project is being eyed there, according to Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

But there are 39 families occupying the area. Leonardia raised this concern to Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) chairman Noel Felongco during the latter’s visit in the city on Wednesday.

PCUP assistant chief of operation for Visayas Neil Victor Saril said they already conducted three meetings with the informal settlers.

Saril said in those meetings, they have explained the reasons why informal settlers need to evacuate the area, which will be a danger zone when the bridge renovation project starts.

The city government has yet to secure a pre-demolition certificate from the PCUP. Such certificate is needed so that demolition works can start.

According to Felongco, the PCUP must still assess if the informal settlers really need to be relocated./PN
