Amid oil price hikes, DTI conducts price monitoring in supermarkets

MANILA – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)  Consumer Protection Group conducted price monitoring in Alabang on Thursday to ensure the suggested retail prices of basic necessities and prime commodities are being followed.

The team inspected the Super 8 Store which was found to be compliant as products sold on the shelves were well within the suggested retail price (SRP).

A popular brand of detergent bar was priced lower at P20 against the prevailing SRP of P21.

Condensed milk and evaporated milk were priced at P52.10 and P37.55, respectively. Both were lower than their SRP of 54.50 and P39.50

Other commodities such as coffee, soy sauce and vinegar were also below SRP.

A local bread product and instant noodles maintained the same price as the SRP.

Super 8 store manager Amable Ama said they will make sure they follow the SRP imposed by DTI. “We will maintain that because our company is aware that our products should sell lower [than SRP].”

At the nearby store, most products were one-peso lower than the prevailing SRP.

DTI undesecretary Ruth Castelo said the recent oil price hike should not yet reflect on the prices of basic necessities and prime commodities.

Yung taas ng presyo ng gasolina this week dapat hindi pa apektado yun mga bilihin this week kasi nandyan na yan naka stock na yan so yun logistical requirement nyan napunuan na nandito na sa tindahan yon,” she said.

She also reminded store managers that any price adjustments should be brought to the attention of DTI. (GMA News)
