Bacolod’s Taculing eyed as model in waste mgt

BACOLOD City – Barangay Taculing will be this capital city’s “model village” for implementing Republic Act (RA) 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, according to Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran.

Familiaran, who chairs the city’s Solid Waste Action Team (SWAT), said residents in Barangay Taculing  – being home to many subdivisions – will find it easy to follow the “no segregation, no collection” policy.

If Familiaran’s plan will be successful, solid waste management practices in Barangay Taculing will be replicated by other villages in Bacolod, starting with Alijis or Mansilingan.

The solid waste management efforts will start once Lady Gles Gonzales assumes post as Taculing’s village chief in June.

The city government has already implemented RA 9003 in Bacolod but the results were “very ppor,” according to Familiaran.

Many Bacolodnons were noncompliant with the “no segregation, no collection” policy, he added.

This prompted the SWAT to install a “model village” so that RA 9003 would be observed effectively in the city.

Meanwhile, there is an ongoing search for the most “clean and green” barangay in Bacolod.

Next month, Councilor Cindy Rojas, the chairwoman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod committee on environment, will evaluate villages in relation to the competition.

The criteria for judging are general cleanliness and environment-friendly practices (55 percent), space greening (35 percent) and support system (10 percent).

The competition has two categories – urban and rural.

There will be five winners in each category. Consolation prizes will also be given away.

For rural villages, the first placer will receive P350,000 worth of projects.

The second placer will receive P250,000 worth of projects, while the third placer, P200,000, the fourth placer, P150,000, and the fifth placer, P100,000.

The 10 consolation prizes in the rural category will be worth P20,000 each.

For urban villages, the first placer will receive P300,000 worth of projects while the second placer, P200,000, the third placer, P150,000, the fourth placer, P100,000, and the fifth placer, P50,000.

There are 30 consolation prizes in the urban category, each worth P15,000./PN
