NEGRENSE volleyball players continue to invade Manila with setter Jessa Corsame set to suit up for Lyceum of the Philippines Lady Pirates in the upcoming NCAA women’s volleyball.
Corsame, who played high school ball for Casa Marie Learning Institute in Tanjay, Negros Oriental and at the Rafael B. Lacson Memorial High School in Negros Occidental, said she still cannot believe she will be able to play in a Manila-based school.
“Just like any other volleyball player from the province, pangarap ko talaga na makapaglaro sa Manila and I am glad na mabigyan ako ng opportunity to play for Lyceum,” Corsame said.
“I know I am a newcomer here so I will try to help the team in any capacity. And hopefully we can win more games this season,” she added. “Gusto ko din ipakita na tama sila sa desisyon na kunin ako.”
Lady Pirates is hoping for a better showing in the upcoming NCAA women’s volleyball season after finishing at ninth place in Season 93 with just one win in nine matches.
2 VOLLEYBALL ORGS ON THE RISE IN NEGROS
Following the retreat of Negros Occidental Volleyball Association after four decades of serving as the prime mover of volleyball in the province, two organizations have emerged to continue the job.
The Negros Federation of Volleyball Enthusiasts, Inc. (NeFVEi) and the Negros Volleyball Federation (NVF) have recently been established to take over the task of NOVA in developing province-based talents.
The NeFVEi, which is led by Jon Mar Aguillon, aims to be a venue of volleyball enthusiasts to not only compete but also participate in various social activities that will promote self-development, brotherhood and friendship.
“Our group is also geared to value our members, look upon our peers and be respected by its rivals and followed by society,” Aguillon said.
Other officers of the group are Mercy Nillos, vice president; Mercirose Rafil, secretary; Jose Montalbo, treasurer; Jeffrey Getida, auditor; and Roberto Galamba Jr., public information officer.
The NVF, meanwhile, has young and tested leader and event organizer Carmela Arcolas-Gamboa as its interim president. Gamboa was the one behind the successful Philippine Superliga All-Stars in Silay City recently.
“We are here to continue the volleyball grassroots program in Negros Occidental,” Gamboa told Buzzer Beater.
Former NOVA president Roger Banzuela said the emergence of the two groups is a good sign to further develop young volleyball players in Negros Occidental.
“It is time for the young players to take over the volleyball leadership. I am not getting any younger. I am 71 years old this December,” said Banzuela./PN
