Lady Volcanoes stuns India en route to Asia women’s rugby finals

MANILA – Philippine Lady Volcanoes put forward a strong performance to beat India 19-5 and advance to the finals of the Division 1 Asia Rugby Women’s Championships in Singapore.

Lady Volcanoes will face off with Singapore in the knockout finals at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Queenstown Stadium.

After missing its initial attempts, Lady Volcanoes drew first blood as Sylvia Tudoc bust through the Indian defense in the 22nd minute. Agot Danton made 2 extra points for them to take a 7-0 lead at the half.

The Philippines sustained its aggression in the second half.

Tanya Escala Bird drove her way through under the posts to give the Lady Volcanoes an extra boost. Danton once again added the extra points for a 14-0 advantage.

Ada Milby, who was inserted just in the second half, scored a 5-pointer to further raise Lady Volcanoes’ edge 19-0.

India did not go home empty-handed after converting a 5-pointer late in the match.
