MANILA – Local government units (LGUs) and the Department of Education (DepEd) must intensify their information campaign against diseases that spread during the wet season.
Sen. Nancy Binay stressed this following reports of dengue cases in Cordillera Administrative Region, which drastically increased 87 percent in the first 17 weeks of 2018.
“Nakakabahala po na almost close to 100 percent ang itinaas ng dengue fever cases sa Cordillera mula Enero hanggang Mayo ng taong ito, according to the Department of Health (DOH),” Binay said.
She added that the LGUs and the DepEd must help each other in disseminating “timely information” that will educate people about the disease.
The rising incidence of dengue cases can be attributed to poor sanitation, improper waste management and unhygienic surroundings, said Binay.
Meanwhile, the senator requested local authorities, the Armed Forces of the Philippines reserve force and the Department of Public Works and Highways to help in cleanup drives, especially in schools.
“Mas maraming pwedeng makagat ang dengue fever-carrying mosquitoes sa mga paaralan kaya’t pagtuunan po natin ng pansin ang kalinisan nito, kaya i-check po natin ang posibleng breeding ground ng mga lamok tulad ng di dumadaloy na tubig,” Binay said. “Pagtuunan din po natin ng pansin ang mga drainage systems, water storage, catchments at impounding facilities, at flood-prone areas.”
She also urged the public to observe DOH’s “4S” Kontra Dengue strategy.
The 4S stands for searching and destroying mosquito breeding places, self-protection measures, seeking early consultation, and saying no to indiscriminate fogging./PN
