MANILA – TNT KaTropa guard Jericho Cruz is more than excited to be part of the Gilas Pilipinas team that will compete in the 18th Asian Games from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Iloilo City native said he is thrilled to once again represent the country in the international competition after being part of the Philippine gold medal team in the Southeast Asian Games in 2013.

Sobrang happy. It’s a dream come true,” said the former Adamson University Falcons star. “I get to represent not only my team but buong bayan. Blessing in disguise iyon na I can do it with my team.”

“I was part of the Philippine team before in the SEA Games and we’re on the top then,” he added. “Kaya sobrang saya nitong chance to represent the country again. I just want to cherish the moment.”

Joining Cruz in the national squad are his KaTropa teammates Terrence Romeo, Roger Pogoy, Troy Rosario, Jayson Castro, Celedonio Trollano, Anthony Semerad, and Kelly Williams.

Plucked by head coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes from Gilas Pilipinas Cadets team are Kobe Paras, Ricci Rivero and Abu Tratter. Naturalized center Andray Blatche will also be there to reinforce the lineup.

Reyes was forced to insert and KaTropa dominated the Gilas team since the Games will be in conflict with the PBA Governor’s Cup schedule and other teams are not inclined to release players.

“That’s the statement released by the PBA. That’s all part of the consideration,” said Reyes. “That’s why it’s tough to come up with a final roster because we have to consider so many things.”

The men’s basketball team was submitted to chief of mission Richard Gomez on June 15 yet. It will be forwarded to the Philippine Olympic Committee executive council for final confirmation this week./PN
