FOUR Negrense and one Ilongga track and field players will represent the Philippines in the 10th ASEAN School Games (ASG) from July 19 to 23 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Head coach Addy Arca said representing the country in the five-day event are Franz Gela Bintad, Ann Katherine Quitoy, Trexie dela Torre, and Bernalyn Bejoy of Negros Occidental, and Alexie Mae Caimoso Brooks of Iloilo.
âThe players are excited to participate in the ASEAN School Games. We are doubling our efforts in practice so we can perform well despite facing tough odds,â Arca told Panay News.
Bintad, a gold medal winner during the 2018 Palarong Pambansa in Ilocos Sur, said she will give her best to keep in step with her ASEAN counterparts in secondary girls discus throw.
âMedyo mahirap dahil malalakas ang kalaban from other ASEAN countries,â said the Bacolod Tay Tung High School standout. âBasta ako I will go there to give my best and hopefully take home a medal.â
Quitoy, a gold medal winner in Palaro and Philippine National Games, will be competing in javelin throw, Dela Torre in triple jump, and Brooks in high jump. Bejoy will participate in marathon events.
The ASG is an annual sporting event that aims to enhance friendship among students around the Southeast Asian region.
It also seeks to promote ASEAN solidarity among the youth through school sports and provide opportunities for school athletes to engage in cultural exchange.
Other participating nations are host Malaysia, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam./PN
