Joe orders probe on ‘illegal’ collection at terminal market

Mayor Jose Espinosa III

ILOILO City – Mayor Jose Espinosa III ordered an investigation on the alleged illegal collection of fees from vendors at the Iloilo Terminal Market popularly known as “Super.”

“Collecting fees beyond what is provided for by law is,” said Espinosa.

Tasked to conduct the probe was Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO) chief Ariel Castañeda.

The LEEO is overseeing the operation of all public markets in the city.

Reports reached the mayor’s office that “Super” vendors were being asked to cough up money for a trapal (plastic waterproof sheeting) that would be used as temporary roof to shield them from the market’s leaking roofs.

The roof of the Iloilo Terminal Market is currently being rehabilitated.

Espinosa called on those who know something about the illegal collection to come forward and give him names of the culprits.

“If he or she is a city government casual or job hire, we will fire him or her immediately,” said Espinosa.

Charges may also be filed against the illegal collectors, he added./PN
