BACOLOD City – A radioman was shot to death in front of his wife in Barangay Rizal, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

The 35-year-old resident Julius Broce Barellano died of eight gunshot wounds on the different parts of the body, a police report showed.

Two unidentified suspects had a hand in Barellano’s death, according to the police. They shot the radioman near his house at around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Barellano was rushed to the San Carlos City Hospital where he was pronounced “dead on arrival.”

The suspects, on the other hand, fled on board a motorcycle, the police added.

Barellano is a radio correspondent of 101.5 FM Radyo Bandera Bacolod who is also affiliated with the National Federation of Sugarcane Workers (NFSW).

He is the leader of the Hacienda Medina Farm Workers Association in San Carlos City.

Christian Tuayon, chairperson of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan Negros and a close friend of Barellano, said the motive in the shooting is likely related to a land conflict.

Tuayon said Barellano had been at the forefront of a legal dispute over an ejection case involving about 140 tenants in Hacienda Medina.

The NFSW in a statement condemned Barellano’s killing.

Police were still investigating the death./PN
