ANGEL Locsin wants a stop to being pitted against Liza Soberano, who is succeeding her as the iconic superheroine Darna in Star Cinema’s upcoming big-budget film.
On Instagram Tuesday, the 33-year-old actress answered a comment asking her to fill in the red boots of the Mars Ravelo character again, and which criticized Soberano for being supposedly “malamya,” or weak.
The comment was left on Locsin’s recent video post, which shows her undergoing knife combat training for her upcoming series “The General’s Daughter.” It reads, unedited:
“Ikaw na lang po sana nag darna ms @therealangellocsin kaya mo din pala mag action ngayon sayang lang po yung pinalit pa sayo lampa pa wala pang napatunayan kahit sa bagani ang lamya kumilos”
While the comment did not specifically mention Soberano, it pertained to “Bagani,” the ongoing fantaserye which stars the young actress as the heroine Ganda.
Tagging the follower who left the comment, Locsin replied: “not true. she can do action scenes really well 🙂 sana stop na to. Thanks.”
In another reply to a different follower, Locsin clarified that the knife combat training was not for the “Darna” project.
Star Cinema’s “Darna” movie was first announced in 2015, with Locsin attached to the role and Erik Matti directing. Later that year, Locsin revealed having sustained a back injury, for which she had to undergo therapy. By March 2017, Locsin confirmed she could no longer push through as Darna, citing her condition and the physical demands of the project. Two months later, Soberano was announced to be taking on the role, still with Matti directing.
While many welcomed the new casting, some loyal followers of Locsin were dismayed with the outcome and questioned Soberano’s ability to do the coveted role justice. Others went as far as hurling insults at the Star Magic talent.
Through it all, however, Locsin has only been supportive of Soberano, referring to her as “deserving” of being cast as Darna. She also asked her supporters, as early as mid-2017, to refrain from criticizing Soberano, saying, “Huwag naman sana, kasi kung anong nangyari sa akin, walang kasalanan si Liza.”
The two were then spotted together, in December 2017, having a conversation as they held hands, in what was believed to be their first meeting since the announcement of Soberano succeeding Locsin in the project. (ABS-CBN News)
