MANILA – Prices of some basic goods and prime commodities went up starting July 1, the Department of Trade and Industry said.

Select brands of canned sardines, beef loaf, meat loaf, and corned beef have gone up ranging from P0.65 to P1.45.

A couple of evaporated and condensed milk brands also went up ranging from P1 to P2, while a laundry soap brand rose by P0.50.

Trade undersecretary Ruth Castelo said these brands have not raised prices since the start of the year, but rising costs of raw materials – among other factors – led to price increases.

“Specifically, pagtaas ng presyo ng tin plates lalo na nang canned goods. ‘Di naman natin maiwasan because it’s the increase in prices in the international market na hindi kontrolado ng Pilipinas … Papel na iniimport natin from China, tapos ‘yung fluctation ng peso value against the dollar, at recently tumaas na naman ang gasolina … ”

The DTI, however, warned groceries and supermarkets must not increase prices just yet if they are still selling old stocks bought at lower prices.

“‘Pag existing ‘yung stock hindi mo pa iaapply ‘yung price increase. Iaapply mo lang ‘yun pag naubos na at bibili ka ng bago.”  (GMA News)
