ILOILO City – Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Iloilo City federation president Leila Luntao has big shoes to fill in the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP).
She has formally assumed the chairmanship of the SP committee on sports and youth development.
The committee was handled by Councilor Lady Julie Grace Baronda for four years. She relinquished it to Luntao during last week’s SP session.
Under the Local Government Code, the SK federation president automatically chairs the committee on sports and youth development.
Baronda challenged Luntao to strengthen, serve and protect the interest and goals of 15- to 30-year-old youths in the city.
“We implore you to ensure the eloquent participation of the youth in the local governance of Iloilo City. We hope and pray that you live and embody that spirit of Republic Act 10742 or the SK Reform Act of 2015,” Baronda told Luntao.
According to Baronda, during the four years she handled the committee on sports and youth development, the SP was able to make the youth of Iloilo City realize their vital role in nation-building with the support of the Local Youth Commission, Local Youth Development Office and various sectors.
“We spearheaded the inculcation of patriotism, nationalism and all other desirable values on the youth,” she stressed.
These, she added, were reflected on legislations and programs the SP introduced such as the creation of Iloilo City Youth Council, establishment of youth laboratories and the Iloilo City Leadership Academy and many more programs geared towards the physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being of the youth.
“This is a reminder, an encouragement and a challenge to you. Encourage the youth to be involved in public and civic affairs,” Baronda told Luntao./PN
