MANILA – Negros First made a quick work of Canada 15-0 in the 2018 Junior League Softball World Series at the Everest Ballpark in Kirkland, Washington on Tuesday night (Wednesday in Manila).
Bacolod City native Glecilyn Alipato captured the victory for the Negrense squad as she surrendered zero runs on zero hits over four innings while striking out six and walking zero.
Negros First, representing the Philippines and Asia-Pacific, also tallied 10 hits in the match with Shanayah Sion going for a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Mea Tubongbanua had multiple hits.
Ma. Victoria Magbanua made the most plays (six) for the Negros team, which comprised mostly players from Domingo Lacson National High School.
Negros First surged to an early lead when Magbanua scored off Canada’s errors and another single in the first inning. Canada struggled to contain the high-powered offense of the Philippines, giving up 15 runs.
Alyssa Opgenorth took the loss for Canada as she allowed eight hits and nine runs over two and two-thirds innings while walking zero.
With a 2-1 win-loss card, the Antonio Oquindo Jr.-mentored local team will try to go for a higher seed heading into the playoffs when it closes its elimination round match against Central (Ohio) Thursday morning (Manila time)./PN
