Iloilo launching Palarong Panlungsod

AIMING to discover potential Ilonggo athletes, the Iloilo City government is set to launch the 2018 Palarong Panlungsod on Sunday at the La Paz plaza gym.

The barangay-based sports program will open in a ceremony at 9 a.m., according to Moises Salomon of the city government’s Sports Development Division.

“This is part of Mayor Jose Espinosa III’s Pag-ulikid program,” Salomon said. “This is patterned from the annual Palarong Pambansa program of the Department of Education.”

Palarong Panglungsod, which is for Ilonggo athletes born in 2000 and up or 18 years and under, will have 11 sports disciplines on tap.

Among the events are arnis, basketball, boxing, chess, futsal, karatedo, lawn tennis, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, and wushu/sanda.

Palarong Panlungsod is “timely, as it will be part of the preparations for the PSC (Philippine Sports Commission) Visayas Open on Aug. 10 to 12,” said Salomon./PN
