MANILA – Filipina wushu bet Agatha Wong handed Team Philippines its third bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games on Monday at the Jakarta International Expo in Indonesia.
The 21-year-old Wong, a gold and silver medal winner in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, took home the bronze medal in the women’s taijiquan and taijijian all-around final.
Wong finished the competition with a total of 19.36 points behind gold medal winner Lindswell Kwok of Indonesia (19.50) and Juanita Mok Uen Ying from Hong Kong (19.42).
It was the third bronze medal of the country after the men’s poomsae team of Rodolfo Reyes Jr., Dustin Mella and Jeordan Dominguez and the women’s team of Juvenile Crisostomo, Rinna Babanto and Janna Oliva snagged a bronze each on Sunday.
For its part the Philippine Blu Girls softball team kicked off its campaign with a 7-0 victory over Hong Kong on Sunday night at the Gelora Bung Karno softball field in Jakarta.
Led by Negrenses Kaith Ezra Jalandoni and Riflayca Basa, the Blu Girls cruised to a 6-0 advantage in the first inning before adding another one in the fourth before the game was halted.
Despite the shutout win, Blu Girls head coach Randy Dizer was not satisfied.
His wards cannot afford to have the same performance against powerhouse teams Korea and China or “they will be in trouble,” said Dizer.
In addition, the Philippines’ top tennis player Jeson Patrombon was in vintage form Sunday, starring in the country’s twin victories at the Jakabaring Sports City courts in Palembang.
Patrombon had a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Timor Leste’s Nazario Fernandez Gusmao in men’s singles, and then teamed up with Francis Casey Alcantara in the afternoon to dispatch Qatar’s Jabar Al Mutawa and Mubarak Zayid 6-4, 6-2 in doubles.
The first-time partnership of Antiqueña Marian Jade Capadocia and Alberto Lim Jr. suffered a stinging 4-6, 4-6 loss to the seventh-seeded Indian tandem of Khamran Kaur Thandi and Divij Sharan in mixed doubles.
Hagen Topacio, on the other hand, overcame a shaky start but came storming back to score 71 points and wind up in a tie for third with six others after the first three rounds of shooting’s trap event./PN
