Negrense bags 2 golds in North American jiu-jitsu

MANILA – Sunny Diego showed his dominance by capturing two gold medals in the 14th North American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation in Cerritos College in Los Angeles, California.

The native of Candoni, Negros Occidental stamped class in the NABJJF Master 2 Middle Weight Division and in the Master 2 Open Weight Division.

Diego represented Grand Mountain Jiu-Jitsu under Gracie Humaita, Isaac Morales and Jeysen Santiago, with coach Mailson Leal in the Aug. 11-12 event.

“I want to inspire the young people of today through my achievements,” Diego said. “If someone from Negros can make it internationally, then anybody in a third-world country can. Be relentless.”

Prior to this Diego captured gold and silver medals at the American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Los Angeles International Open 2018 on June 23 and 24, also in California.

Diego, an alumnus of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, was a former municipal councilor of Candoni before moving to southern California where he works as a speaker for John Maxwell.

Jiu-jitsu is martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It is an effective self-defense technique./PN
