Fisherman found dead

ILOILO – A fisherman from the island barangay of Manlot in Carles, Iloilo was found dead, according to the Philippine Coast Guard.

The 19-year-old David Banes was believed to have fallen overboard and drowned. Local fisherfolk found his body on the evening of Aug. 28.

Banes was last seen alive at around 4 p.m. that day. He was paddling his small fishing boat some 100 meters off the coast of the island village, the Coast Guard said in a spot report.

From what the Coast Guard has gathered, Banes was suffering from meningitis. He may have fallen off his boat unconscious, the agency said.

Personnel from the Coast Guard substations in Carles and Estancia searched the area where Banes was last seen but to no avail.

At around 8 p.m. the Carles substation received a report from a villager, Ronel Estoy, that Banes’ body was found.

Coast Guard personnel and local fisherfolk retrieved the body.

The remains have been turned over to the family, the Coast Guard report stated./PN
