Bing may sign sanitary landfill cell deal – city council

Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia.

BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod granted Mayor Evelio Leonardia the authority to sign a contract on the construction of Cell No. 2 of the local government-managed sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa.

City hall is entering into the P49-million contract with the IPM Construction and Development Corp. Leonardia and IPM’s Isabelita Mercado are expected to sign the deal.

The bidding for the project was conducted in June, said Bids and Awards Committee chairman Maphilindo Polvora.

Leonardia requested for the authority to sign only recently after some provisions of the contract were revised, said Councilor Caesar Distrito, chairman of the finance and appropriations committee.

Cell No. 1 of the sanitary landfill was already full.

To fully comply with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, the local government must build another cell and stop dumping at Cell No. 1.

Using the vacant space near Cell No. 1 in building Cell No. 2 is the “fastest and most practical way to comply with the law,” said Leonardia.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the city government no longer needs clearance for the construction of the new cell since its site is within the property covered by the sanitary landfill, he added./PN
