BACOLOD City – Farmers in Negros Occidental incurred production loss worth a total of P3.8 million due to the monsoon rains that super typhoon “Ompong” enhanced over the weekend.
The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) reported on Monday that four localities in the province suffered from the damage.
Among those affected were 713 farmers with their combined rice field areas of 764.38 hectares in 13 villages, the OPA added.
San Carlos City posted the highest loss at P2.1 million, involving 646 farmers with 679.80 hectares of rice fields in six barangays.
Cadiz City came next with P1.5 million, affecting 55 farmers with 54 hectares in four barangays.
Bago City – dubbed as the “rice granary” of Negros Occidental – suffered from P192,240 worth of damage, with nine farmers in one barangay and their 10.68-hectare rice field affected.
In Moises Padilla, three farmers in two barangays incurred loss worth P24,299 in their 1.90-hectare rice fields.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Veterinary Office reported livestock loss of about P120,000 in four barangays in three localities in Negros Occidental.
The affected animals include cattle, sow, piglet, and calf – all raised in backyard farms.
The livestock damage reached P95,374 in Candoni’s barangays East and West.
In Kabankalan City, three backyard farms in Barangay Bantayan incurred P20,000 worth of damage, affecting farmers raising ducks, native chickens and piglets.
A total of P4,633 worth of chicken layers at a backyard farm in Barangay 2, Hinoba-an was also reported damaged. (With PNA/PN)
